Making Your Student Accommodation Feel Like Home
When you first move into your student accommodation, you can feel daunted, alone, and out of sync with your self. Usually, this relates to homesickness, but it is also from feeling uncomfortable where you are living. To combat this feeling, you should try to make your student accommodation feel like your home.
You pay the student rent and your student accommodation room becomes yours for the duration. While you cannot put up anything that will create lasting damage to the walls, you can put up pictures and posters with Blu-tak or picture mounts that you can remove without damaging the walls when you leave your student accommodation. Putting up a familiar picture or poster will make you feel more like your student accommodation is home.
You can even make a collage of photos on your bedroom wall to help you to remember all your friends and family members. Sometimes, these visual representations of your loved ones can help you to feel less alone.
Beyond decorating the walls of your student accommodation, you can do several other things to make you feel at home in your new surroundings. Put a colourful doona on your bed and unpack your bags quickly when you arrive. The longer you live out of a suitcase, the less likely you will feel like you live there. When you go on a holiday, you don’t always unpack your bag, but when you live somewhere, you should unpack straight away. Find a niche for your all your little knick knacks and you will feel better immediately.
The next thing to do is to combat your feelings of being alone. The best thing about the student accommodation is that you are not alone. There are other students, all in the same situation you can talk to and become friends with in a short time. Instead of staying in your bedroom, head out into the main living areas and get to know your neighbours. As you make friends, you will feel much more comfortable and will start to feel like your student accommodation is really your new home.
It is important to feel like you are at home in your new student accommodation. You will settle in much easier and will feel like you are at home in your student accommodation if you can decorate the room, unpack your bags, and meet the other students in the accommodation.
