Living in Student Accommodation

For students living away from home in their new student accommodation, it can come as a bit of a shock. If you’re like many young people you’ve been spoiled at home and haven’t had to do all the household chores by yourself. If you’re fortunate enough to have some room mates you’ll be able to share the adjustment burden, but here’s some things to remember.

If at first you feel a little overwhelmed and out of place in your new student accommodation, don’t be worried - this feeling is normal and everyone experiences it at some stage. Some things help ease into your new lifestyle, including:

  • Getting involved with student groups at university. It’s a great way to make friends and will help you settle in.
  • Spend time at your student accommodation’s recreational rooms. Have a seat on one of the stuffed chairs, play some pool and make some new friends.
  • Take care of yourself! Eat well, get plenty of sleep and make time for exercise. If your body is run down, your mind won’t be far behind.
  • Do everything in moderation. You might find your new freedoms as a student a little overwhelming, so be careful not to overdo it. Definitely don’t let a good time as a student get in the way of your studies. Focus on the end goal and go for it!
  • Surround yourself with student friends who are going to support you and encourage you to achieve your study goals. Manage your time well, making sure to plan out all that you need to accomplish each day. This will help you to remember your responsibilities and stay on task. Your responsibilities are now more than ever your own.
