Buying University Textbooks as a Student

Once you’ve settled into your new student accommodation, be it in Sydney, Brisbane or Adelaide the next big project is signing into your university of choice and registering for classes.

Most universities offer online enrolment for their current students, so if you are already enrolled in your course, choosing classes is just a matter of navigating the universities online system. For newer students, it’s most likely the university will have you go in for an orientation day – to get an idea of the campus, register for any activities and finalize your student and library cards. If you aren’t familiar with the university, orientation days are a great opportunity to familiarize yourself with class locations and get to know the local lunch spots – without large student crowds to contend with.

Because your orientation and enrolment is so crucial to your course, it’s important you talk to the university to get the correct dates and process lined up.

Once your enrolment is completed and your classes begin, your lecturer and tutor will give you some guidance about the course textbooks and workbooks they’ll be using for the semester. These books are the texts the course work comes from, so if you expect to pass your course, they are absolutely essential for a student to have.

When you are given details on the course texts, the lecturer will often tell you were to go to make your purchase. The best place for textbook purchase is the university bookshop – or the local co-op bookshop on or near campus. The university bookshop will stock most course texts, or be able to order the books in if they’re not immediately available. The co-op bookshop is a university co-operative bookshop and often offers memberships to students which entitle them to a discount off book purchases. Memberships are generally in-expensive and the discounts cover the initial cost.
