Students check out these Sydney Sporting grounds

If you’re a full time student in Sydney, it’s most likely you’ll be offered a place on a sporting team at your university – either to participate or spectate. Fortunately Sydney is arguably the most sports involved city in Australia. The most prominent Australian sports are in order; cricket, tennis, Australian Rules football and swimming.

For our student readers who are sports spectators, you’ll be interested to know the most popular sports in terms of crowd attendance were Australian rules football, horse racing, rugby league, motorsport, cricket, rugby union and soccer in descending order.

The largest sporting ground in Sydney is ANZ stadium. NRL is the most regular tenant of the stadium with 7 teams calling the stadium their home ground, so you won’t be short of a team to barrack for! This stadium is a great place to go and watch; Rugby League games, Aussie Rules football, soccer, Rugby Union and cricket. This stadium is located roughly 14km from Sydney in Sydney Olympic park and is a short train-ride or bus ride during big events. Event organizers will usually organize public transport for games and events – so it’s very easy to get to and from the venue.

Whether you’re a International Student or a local you’ll definitely need to check out Sydney Cricket Ground, which holds 46,000 people. Primary use of the SCG is test cricket, one day international cricket, rugby union and some rugby league. The NSW Blues cricket team and Sydney Swans AFL teams both call this stadium their home ground. The SCG is located in Moore Park – roughly 8km from Sydney. Moore Park is very easy to get to. It’s a short bus ride from downtown Sydney, or a brisk walk from Central Station. Fortunately due to Sydney’s great weather sport events are going on almost year round – meaning there’s always something to do if you haven’t made plans.
