Making Friends in Adelaide
For many students studying away from home is a pretty stressful time. Generally we’re leaving family and our close friends behind to get out of our comfort zones and to see what the world has to offer! The great news is you’ve taken the first step – you’re studying and part of a great student accommodation site. The next step to really settle into your new life is to make some lasting friends.
Being in Adelaide makes you really lucky. The people are laid back and everyone’s super friendly – making it even easier to meet new people. If you’re studying there’s a few good ways to extend your social network.
- Try joining a sport. Even if you’re not the “sporty” type, joining a sporting club or team is not only a great way to meet new people, but it’s also a major confidence booster. It will keep you active and fit while teaching you teamwork and co-ordination. Most universities have their own sporting teams which you can sign up for – perhaps even sign up for a sport you’re not familiar with – underwater chess perhaps?
- Get a part-time job. If you’ve ever wanted to work in a particular field, or if you’re wanting real life experience in the field you’re studying, part time work will not only generate income but it will look great on your CV! You’ll also be interacting with your colleagues and hopefully forging lasting bonds. Make sure you try your hand at something you might not do again – dairy farming or deep see fishing maybe?
- Line up some volunteer work! This is a brilliant option if you’re especially passionate about something. You’ll be able to spend time with like-minded people who appreciate the same things you do. This is also a great chance to give back to the community you’re living in and gives you a great sense of satisfaction.
So – whatever it is, make sure your time as a student is well spent. You’ll definitely find friends during your time studying and social networking helps make the bonds last.
