Writing Clear Essays while studying at University

One skill every university student needs is the ability to write a clear essay. Many of the exams will be essay based, and assignments certainly are. Instead of sitting at your window in your student accommodation, daydreaming and wondering just how to transform your myriad of notes on the topic into a good, clear essay read this blog and then start your essay.

1. Create an Outline
The first step in writing any essay is to create a quick outline of the main text or body of your essay. Look at the essay question carefully and identify if there are actually several questions to answer within the question. If so, you can easily make each question’s answer a separate section within the essay. You can use sub-headings in an essay to make the essay easier to structure and to read.

When you create your outline, list in bullet point form all of the major points you want to cover. Ensure you have researched each of the points you want to cover. You may find it easier to make a note of the research you want to include for each of your major points in your outline.

2. Introduction, Body, Conclusion
Every essay needs an introduction, a body, and a conclusion. Although you will generally use Introduction and Conclusion as sub-headings, you should never use Body as a sub-heading. The body is the main text of the essay and includes all the actual information. The introduction explains to the reader what the essay is about and why the reader should read it. It may also include information on the methodologies used for the study. The conclusion draws all the information together in a way that leaves the reader satisfied at the end of the essay.

3. Write the Introduction Later
One of the key tricks to writing an essay is to start with the body of the information in your first draft. Leave a space at the start for the introduction. Otherwise, you can waste much time staring at a blank page on your computer, wondering what to write. Use your outline and write the body of your essay first. Then read over what you have written. The purpose of your introduction is to tell the reader why you have written the essay and what questions the main text will answer for the reader, so it is easier to write after you have actually written the body of the essay.

4. Ensure your Conclusion Brings in No New Information
Finally, write a conclusion that draws together all of the main points you made in the essay to create a final conclusion. You can use your own opinion in a conclusion, but the most important part of a conclusion is to use only the information in the body of the text to substantiate those opinions. You cannot bring in new information to a conclusion in an essay.

Following these simple guidelines will help you to write clear, concise, and impressive essays.
