How to Feel ‘At Home’ in Student Accommodation
You’re probably going to be spending the better part of 3-4 years living in shared student accommodation, so it pays to make sure you feel ‘at home’ and comfortable with your surroundings. Of course, space is at a premium in your modest-sized room, but there are things you can do to personalise your environment.
Photos/Mementos
Pictures of loved ones are a great way to feel connected, even if you are far from ‘home’. Sometimes, even a photo of your pet dog or cat doing something cute is all it takes to bring a smile to your face! Small knick-knacks or other mementos are also a great way to feel closer to your family.
Don’t forget to take plenty of photos to record your experience at university too – although it may seem like a long time, the years will fly by. If you don’t have your own camera, virtually all mobile phones have camera functions these days, and there are plenty of discount offers to be had when printing digital prints. A great photo of you and your uni buddies could be all it takes to remind you of the good times, when things start getting a bit stressful during exams.
Potted Plants
Office workers have known for quite some time now that live potted plants have health benefits in an office environment – why not in your student accommodation too? Green, leafy plants such as Peace Lillies are excellent at absorbing nasty airborne chemicals, and can bring about a sense of calm. There’s nothing better than watching your tiny seedling maturing into a thriving plant. Very cheap, and sometimes even free, seeds or seedlings are often available at weekend markets. It does not take much room to have a small potted plant on your desk to brighten your study environment.
Declutter
No matter how many gorgeous family photos, candid snapshots with friends and trinkets you have, too many is always a bad thing. Student accommodation generally has room enough for your necessities, as well as a few personal touches. Loading up everything you had in your bedroom at the family home will likely just overcrowd your student room, making it feel cluttered and messy. Clutter is well known to cause stress – and who needs to run around looking for your lecture book, which turns out to be wedged between the 20 photo albums under your bed?
You have to make your rented student room feel like your own space where you can be free to study, dream, and relax.
